Oopsie; after a debian upgrade last night, php took a nosedive. I’ve tracked it down to the PAM module in php4 causing some kind of crash; so disabled that and Bob’s your Uncle, the site’s back.
Looks like I’m not the only person suffering from a similar problem too; this is where I found some similar issues but nothing in that bug mentions pam; I could well be barking up the wrong tree.
